China wins in a stunner!

If you're not watching the FIBA World Championships, now's the time to start, since the round robin is over and it's time for single-elimination with the round of 16. Check it out on ESPN2 (late at night they show the US games) and FSN (they replay the NBATV games in the morning).

Shipeng Wang's buzzer-beating three-pointer gave China a 78-77 triumph over Slovenia in a thriller on Thursday to place the Asian Champions in the last 16 of the FIBA World Championship. With six seconds remaining in Sapporo, a Uros Slokar lay-up gave Slovenia a 77-75 advantage and the Europeans looked to have secured the win. But Wang ran all the way to the other end and buried the biggest shot of his career, and arguably the most important shot in Chinese basketball history to give his side the second triumph of the tournament and more importantly, a trip to Saitama. The points were the first Shipeng had scored in the game.

Slovenia led 74-70 after Becirovic banked in a jumper with 1:17 to play, but Yao's basket with 30 seconds to play tied it at 75. Uros Slokar scored inside with 6 seconds to go for Slovenia, and China quickly rushed the ball up the court. Wang made his shot from the left side for his only basket of the game, then was mobbed by his teammates.

"I only had 5.8 seconds," Wang said through a translator. "How much could I think about? All I can do is dribble to the frontcourt and take the shot."
